Why sell your fine art with Hepplewhites?

Specialists in British and European paintings from the Old Masters era through to 18th Century and modern day

Traditionally, those seeking to sell fine art – from Old Masters to Impressionist, landscapes, seascapes or life stills – might assume a public auction to be the most effective approach to get the best prices for their items. However, because of the current buyer’s premium of 30% (inclusive of VAT), the buyers bidding on your items will reduce their bids accordingly.

Additionally, an auction house will also charge you a seller’s fee, illustration fee and insurance, as well as VAT, meaning that if your item sells you will only receive 45% of its true value and if your item doesn’t sell, you will still be responsible for paying the auction house certain fees.

In addition, it may take up to three months after the auction house consigns your pieces for the first appropriate sale to occur and at least another month until you are paid, making a total of four months minimum before you receive any payment. Any unsold pieces will be re-entered to another fine art sale, often taking several months before another suitable sale is available. Furthermore, since the item has already been exposed to the market, you will have to lower your price in order to encourage the sale, as your item will now be less appealing to potential customers.

Choosing Hepplewhites gives you peace of mind that you will receive true market value for your fine art; a streamlined and discreet approach to selling your items, without the risk of going unsold, or delayed payments. We pay 100% of our valuation to you.

How do we value fine art?

Our specialists have a huge amount of experience in the fine art market, with a finger on the pulse of current trends in fine art demand. Here are the key factors we consider when evaluating your artwork.

Provenance

One of the most important factors we assess when valuing fine art is provenance, or the artwork’s history and authenticity. A strong ownership record, especially if the piece was held by a notable collector or exhibited in a prestigious gallery can significantly boost its value. Be sure to have certificates of authenticity, receipts, or expert attributions, as these provide credibility and make your artwork more attractive to our collectors.

Artist reputation and significance

If your piece is by a well-known artist, it will likely fetch a higher price. Works from an artist’s most influential period or signature style are particularly valuable. Even if the artist isn’t a household name, factors such as gallery representation can increase demand.

Condition of your artwork

The condition of your artwork matters, as damage, fading, or poor restoration can lower its value. While professional restoration can sometimes preserve worth, excessive repairs may reduce appeal. If your artwork has been restored, documentation of the process can help reassure collectors. Certain materials, like oil on canvas, tend to be more valuable and durable than paper-based or mixed-media pieces.

Rarity and demand

Unique, one-of-a-kind works usually command higher prices, while limited-edition prints can hold value, especially if they are from a small series or signed by the artist.

Art that is part of an iconic series or movement tends to attract more interest. Market trends also influence demand, so assessing current collector interest in your artist or style allows us to further refine the accuracy of our valuations.
